We cannot believe June is already here! If the pace of May was any indicator, June will fly by just as quickly. Our students and staff have been working hard, and we are extremely proud of the progress our students have made since September. This month, we have much to celebrate with recognition events, concerts, the Washington, D.C. trip, the 7th-grade Seabreeze trip, 5th- and 6th-grade field day, and the 8th-grade celebration night. Please review the events section of this newsletter closely!
We want to say thank you to the student leaders and chaperones who made the 8th-grade dance a success! There were so many smiles and memories made. We appreciate our student council for creating this special event for our 8th-grade class each year. Next Wednesday, our 8th-grade class will head to Washington, D.C. for their class trip. We hope those attending have an amazing time!
🗓️8th-grade families – We are looking forward to hosting the 8th Grade Celebration Night at the High School PAC on June 24 at 7:00 PM! In addition to handing out certificates of completion, we will have a photography station for families and students to take pictures, along with refreshments following the ceremony in the high school cafeteria. An invitation will be sent in the mail. We hope to see you all there!
Though there is excitement about the end of the year and summer vacation, we also feel sadness knowing that each day brings us closer to saying goodbye to our 8th graders. We have some amazing young adults among us, and we will miss them!
As we prepare to bid farewell to our 8th-grade students, we are also gearing up to welcome our incoming 5th-grade class! We had a successful 5th Grade Parent Night on May 14. It was a delight to meet some of our new students and families. Our counselors have arranged 4th-grade class visits to the middle school so our future 5th graders have an opportunity to see the school, sit in classrooms, and even eat in the cafeteria. Their excitement and curiosity about middle school have been wonderful to see!
Character Education – As a school community, we focused on the following character traits throughout the year: Respect, Responsibility, Care and Compassion, Acceptance, Perseverance, Self-Discipline, Patience, and Healthy Lifestyles. Teachers and staff recognized students with over 1,100 positive-recognition cards this year! Of course, academic achievement is a top priority at Wayne Middle School, but we are also committed to helping students become kind, empathetic, and productive members of society who will help make our world a better place. Thank you for all of your support!

After-School activity bus runs (3:00 PM and 4:00 PM) will end on Tuesday, June 16.
-
Locker Cleanouts will begin on Thursday, June 18 and continue on Monday, June 22. We encourage students to bring home non-essential items this week. By June 23, we hope everything is cleared out. Unused or gently-used items can be brought home or donated for next year's students.
-
Chromebook collections will occur in 1st-period classes on Thursday, June 18 for grades 5, 6, 7. They will continue during the last 3 days of school. Students must return their Chromebooks, chargers, and Chromebook cases. Our goal is to have everything collected so we do not have to inconvenience your families during the summer.

Beginning this week, WMS will be piloting a new digital hall pass system called SmartPass. While our current pass system generally works well, we are always looking for ways to improve student accountability, maximize instructional time, and enhance school safety. This pilot will help us determine whether SmartPass is a tool we would like to continue using in the future.
SmartPass is a Chromebook-based system that allows students to quickly create a digital pass when they need to leave class for reasons such as using the restroom, getting a drink, visiting the nurse, going to the library, or meeting with a teacher. The process is simple and takes only 3 clicks.
The system provides staff with a clearer picture of who is out of class and where students are expected to be during the school day. This helps us:
- Reduce unnecessary time out of class
- Minimize student meet-ups
- Monitor overuse of passes
- Maximize instructional time
- Enhance student safety and accountability
How will it work? Students will continue to follow their teachers' normal procedures for requesting permission to leave class. Once approved, they will create a pass in SmartPass on their Chromebook and place their Chromebook in a designated location in the classroom so the teacher can easily monitor who is out and when they should return.
Certain pass types will have time limits based on their purpose (for example, a quick drink pass may be limited to 2 minutes). We will monitor and adjust the limits throughout the month.
This is a trial period, and we expect to learn a great deal as we implement the system throughout June. Wayne High School currently uses SmartPass and has reported positive results with student accountability and hallway management.
Thank you for your support as we explore ways to improve the school experience for all students! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Book Fair will host a parent night along with the Art Show from 5-7 on Tuesday June 10th. All purchases through the Book Fair benefit our school in new books for the library. Thanks for supporting our kids! Happy Reading! Check out the following digital resources for this year’s fair:

The GSA is kicking off a Snack Food Drive to support the Child Advocacy Center of Greater Rochester, the same organization that visited earlier this year with lessons to keep us all safe. In addition to outreach in schools like ours, this organization helps children and families in crisis, and they are in need of individually packaged snacks and drinks to provide comfort during difficult times.
You can help by bringing in items like:
- Capri Sun
- Goldfish
- juice boxes
- Cheez-Its
- Fruit Snacks
- and other grab-and-go snacks
Every donation makes a difference!
Please bring your items to THE LIBRARY all next week during the Scholastic BOOK FAIR, June 1st through the 5th. Let’s come together to support kids in our community—because even a small snack can make a big impact!

NJHS
Another year of NJHS is coming to a close. As the advisor, I am always impressed and inspired by the students that I work with, and this year has been no exception. I’ve discovered that by allowing our high-achieving students to lead, our members rise to the occasion and figure out ways to make our organization relevant and meaningful. Some of the things that we have accomplished this year are:
- We were Ambassadors for various summer, school, and community events.
- As of May 26th, NJHS members have completed an over 1925 hours of community service with more hours expected.
- Members completed portfolios which helped them reflect on their NJHS experience in relation to the five pillars (scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship).
- The Leadership Team met monthly to plan meetings and set expectations. They also led our monthly meetings.
- The Service Team planned three successful chapter service projects. These projects helped people (and animals) in need AND provided individual service hours for members. Thanks to everyone who donated!
- 24 members participated in the Peer Tutoring program, helping fifth to eighth-grade students in a 1:1 or classroom setting.

As summer approaches, it’s important for students to keep reading. Reading a little each day helps prevent the “summer slide” and keeps skills strong for the next school year. Whether your child enjoys comics, adventure stories, or nonfiction, there’s something out there for everyone.
To make reading fun, students can take part in different summer reading challenges (link)! These include library programs, Barnes & Noble (free book), and the 90's favorite Pizza Hut BOOK IT!® challenge.
Encourage your child to read each day, set goals, and celebrate their progress. A few minutes of reading can make a big difference!

Our Prevention Counselor with Delphi Rise at Wayne Central School District, Ms. Hannah Muhic-Stephany, has shared a great resource for families to support a safe, healthy, and substance-free summer for our students.
Supporting a Safe and Substance-Free Summer: As school winds down, it is important to remember that teens and tweens are at a higher risk of experiencing the harms associated with substance use. While summer is a time for fun, it is vital to recognize that there is no "safe" or "risk-free" amount of substance use for our youth.
Red Flags: Possible Signs of Substance Misuse
Stay alert for these changes in your child’s behavior:
-
Sudden or significant shifts in mood, behavior, or their circle of friends.
- An increase in irritability or social withdrawal and isolation.
-
Finding paraphernalia or items associated with substance use.
- A loss of interest or engagement in hobbies and activities they previously enjoyed.
Proactive Tips for Caregivers
Help your child have a healthy, structured, and fun summer with these strategies:
-
Set Clear Expectations: Be direct about family rules and the consequences of substance use.
-
Stay Involved: Always know the "who, what, and where" of your child’s plans.
-
Monitor Your Home: Keep track of and secure items like alcohol or medications.
-
Promote Healthy Habits: Encourage physical activity, outdoor time, and regular breaks from screens.
-
Encourage Structure: When possible, support participation in positive activities like summer jobs, camps, or volunteering.
-
Model the Way: Lead by example by modeling healthy actions and choices in your own life.
-
Talk (Don't Lecture): Aim for brief, open conversations rather than "long lectures". Encourage your teen to share their opinions and ask questions.
Collaborate for Success: Talk to your child about their hopes for the summer and discuss how you can work together to make it both safe and fun!
