Wayne Central Middle School

STAR and SAEBRS

Student Screeners at WMS

Wayne Middle School students will participate in three rounds of screeners this year to support both academic and social-emotional growth. The first round begins in September:

  • STAR Assessments (September, January, May): Computer-based tests in Math and ELA that help teachers identify what students know and what they’re ready to learn next.
  • SAEBRS Survey (September, January, May): A short well-being screener that helps us understand how students are doing socially, emotionally, and academically.

We use the results from both tools to guide classroom instruction and provide the right supports—such as check-ins with trusted adults, small group sessions, or Academic Intervention Services (AIS)—to help every student succeed.

If you would like to learn more about STAR or SAEBRS, contact your child’s school counselor or assistant principal.

STAR Assessments

At WMS, our students will again be using a  K–12 assessment tool in both reading and math, called the Star Assessments by Renaissance (STAR). This tool will help our teachers better understand each student’s learning needs, so we can provide the right support at the right time. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to a year of growth and success for all students!

What are STAR Assessments?
STAR Assessments are short, computer-based tests that adjust to each student’s responses. They show what your child already knows and what they’re ready to learn next. Teachers will use this information to guide classroom instruction, monitor progress, and provide extra help when needed. These assessments are an important part of our instructional approach, including supports like the Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS).

Assessment Schedule for Wayne Middle School

Students will take the Star Assessments three times during the 2025–2026 school year:

  • Fall: September (2nd week)
  • Winter: January (3rd week)
  • Spring: May (2nd week)

These assessments take approximately one period and will be given during ELA and Math classes those weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: It helps teachers deliver instruction that’s just right for your child’s current learning needs, so they can continue to grow.

Q: Can students take these tests at home?
A: No. Star Assessments are given only at school. However, teachers may share reports with you throughout the year.

SAEBRS

As part of our efforts to support student success, we will be administering the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (SAEBRS) in September, January, and May. This brief survey helps us understand how students are doing in school and identify areas where they may need additional support.

Purpose of the SAEBRS Survey:

  • Helps us monitor overall student well-being related to school success.
  • Provides insights to help us ensure a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Allows us to identify patterns that may inform school wide support efforts.

What to Expect:

  • The survey is brief and will be completed during school.
  • It focuses on student experiences related to school, learning, and behavior.
  • If you have any questions or prefer that your child not participate, please reach out to us.

We appreciate your support as we work to create a positive learning environment for all students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
